Dermaplaning: why you should be shaving your face?
The Internet is a buzz with the latest craze: women shaving their face. Before you think to yourself “I would never do that!” let me introduce you to the world of aesthetics where shaving your face is the norm. Disregard all your preconceived notions of slathering shaving gel over your face and using the same razor that you use to shave your legs. Shaving your face, also referred to as dermaplaning, is a great way to rejuvenate your skin and remove that peach fuzz!
Before you think I’m crazy let me explain what exactly dermaplaning is. Dermaplaning is something that is done in the office by a trained medical professional or aesthetician. The skin is cleaned and dried thoroughly prior to starting. A medical blade is used to manually exfoliate the topmost layer of skin (the stratum corneum) and the peach fuzz (called vellus hair) from the face. The great thing about dermaplaning is that it can be done on almost every area of the face!
There are many benefits to dermaplaning; removing peach fuzz is just the beginning! Below I’ve listed some of the benefits of dermaplaning, so read on to discover why this procedure may just be right for you!
It provides mechanical exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliation is a way of physically removing the dead skin cells. Your skin is made up of layers and layers of cells, all stacked on top of one another. New cells are created at the bottom and they slowly make their way up to the surface, and those cells on the surface flake off to make room for the new cells. Or they’re supposed to. But sometimes, things slow down. Cells build up on top of each other, and causes something called hyperkeratosis. This hyperkeratosis can be the reason for dull complexions, and can even contribute to acne due to the buildup of the stratum corneum (the topmost layer of skin).
Better product penetration. Dermaplaning doesn’t just make your skin feel smooth and soft! It actually allows your daily topical products to have better penetration. Because dermaplaning removes that top hardened layer of skin cells your daily topical products can now go deeper into the skin…instead of just sitting on the surface.
Removes your peach fuzz. Ladies…no one wants a hairy face, right? Dermaplaning safely and effectively removes that peach fuzz. No, your hair is not going to grow back darker and coarser. That my friends, is a myth. The hair may have a blunt edge from dermaplaning, and so may feel sharper, and because that hair has never been exposed to the sun before it can appear darker only because it hasn’t been bleached by the UV rays yet. You can rest assured now that shaving your face won’t make you grow a beard.
Your makeup goes on better. It is the secret of Hollywood. How can you get that flawless looking, smooth skin? Dermaplaning. Once the dead skin cells and the peach fuzz have been removed, you will be amazed at how much better your makeup is applied. And looks!
Dermaplaning is a safe and effective treatment for almost anyone! It is a great choice for those with skin sensitivities to products, or those women who are pregnant or lactating. The only true contraindication for dermaplaning are those individuals who have active cystic acne, as it could potentially cross-contaminate the skin and make the acne worse.
